It Pays Off

We all know what it means to work "on" the business instead of "in" the business. It is all about the BIG PICTURE - focused on the vision, the budget, forecasting, creating the game plan to get where you want to go, marketing, website, etc. Not always the fun part or where we like to spend our time, but it's great when the hard work pays off, and you are smiling because you are achieving your desired outcomes.

The same can be true for families, too, when you intentionally "work on the family."

Here are 4 Keys to Success for Working On Your Family:

1) Set aside time to identify what's important,

2) Imagine what would be ideal,

3) Identify what you want to happen and when, and then

4) Focus on and Invest in what's needed to get you there.

The intentionality and hard work result in your family's successful journey from good to GREAT!

You may ask: "How does someone get started?"

There is a variety of areas families can focus on when "working on the family" so it depends on what is important (and a priority) to the family champions and family members.

Below are several ways we have helped families get started:

1. Preparedness Worksheet (used by family champions to help them begin with the end in mind. This worksheet complements chapter 6 in my book Unprepared: Heirs at Risk)

2. Short assessment (used by family champions and/or all family members to identify areas of priority/importance and current achievement level)

3. FREE Discovery Call with Lori (used by family champions who prefer to have a conversation to help them begin to identify what's possible for their family.)

When getting started, families typically choose to focus on one of these three areas: Enhancing Communication within the family, Preparing the Next Generation, or Creating a Common Family Purpose.

Some family champions want to start with the whole family (typically children over 15) and hold a family meeting. We offer the Family Alignment Milestone (FAM) is a well-crafted family meeting and a powerful way to get the family started on a path together. Thanks to 2020, we offer sections of the FAM virtually to allow more families to get started sooner than later.

Other family champions prefer to begin with themselves and document their values, life lessons, the family stories (that should not be forgotten), their vision for the family's future, and so much more. We use the Guided Discovery Process™ to help clients complete this endeavor.

There are many different places you can start. It all depends on what's on YOUR priority list.
